Recovery fundamentals before recovery gadgets

· 1 min read

First published:

Research through: 28 August 2026

A corrected 28 August edition found that recovery fundamentals deserve priority over optional recovery modalities. The historical source is reconstructed, while the retained review and its limits are explicit.

Selected historical recovery; not an exhaustive account of all research published that week.

Topics: Training, Recovery

Finding

Across 16 randomized trials with 273 competitive or elite endurance athletes, no physical recovery modality reliably outperformed passive recovery for sport-performance recovery.

Limitations: Certainty was mostly low or very low, modalities and outcomes varied, and reduced soreness does not prove restored function or ultra-race readiness.

Evidence level: Moderate evidence

Interpretation

Prioritize ordinary rest, nutrition and symptom-aware return to training. Cold-water immersion, compression and active recovery may be comfort tools, but this review does not establish them as superior performance-recovery treatments.
