ULTRA SCIENCE

Nitrate / beetroot

Possible benefits do not establish an ultra-race effect.

Mechanism and evidence

Dietary nitrate increases nitric-oxide availability. A 2022 expert consensus found effects depend on context and fitness; much remained uncertain. Evidence is less direct for ultras and underrepresents women.

Evidence

Who may benefit?

A recreational runner may consider a repeatable trial after basic nutrition is settled. Highly trained runners should expect uncertain returns. Do not buy it merely because a laboratory oxygen-cost marker improved.

Evidence

Studied use and timing

Trials include acute and repeated use. The consensus describes 8–16 mmol acutely or 4–16 mmol/day repeatedly, last dose 2–4 hours before exercise. These are research ranges, not an ultra prescription; nitrate content matters, not juice volume.

Evidence

Tradeoffs and boundaries

GI tolerance and long-term concentrated use deserve caution. Discuss low blood pressure or medication use with a clinician. Older-ultrarunner benefit and subgroup-specific doses are not established here.

Evidence

Product and cost

A beetroot label is not a verified nitrate amount. Compare transparent formulations and batch checks; current rules still apply. A repeatable useful response is a better purchase criterion than branding.

Evidence

Test a decision, not a marketing story

Write down what a successful trial would look like in a familiar session. A useful outcome might be a repeatable change in how a specific effort feels while GI comfort remains acceptable. It should not be a promise that a small laboratory change will save a particular number of minutes over 100 km. Choose an appropriate session and keep its route, effort, food and environmental context as consistent as practical.

Check whether the product states an actual nitrate amount. If it only states grams of beetroot powder or a proprietary blend, you cannot assume it matches the cited studies. Do not compensate for unclear labeling by taking more. Record the formulation and timing used so an apparent result can be interpreted. If several other elements of training changed simultaneously, label the result uncertain.

The simplest valid outcome is that the product was tolerable but no useful difference was apparent. That can justify not purchasing it again. If the result seems favorable, repeat a comparable rehearsal before assigning the product a race role. A personal trial remains noisy and unblinded; expectation effects and normal day-to-day variation remain possible explanations.

Keep the uncertainty visible

The evidence reviewed here does not supply a reliable dose-response curve for a particular ultrarunner. It also does not show that every beetroot formulation, every fitness level or every race duration responds alike. A stronger evidence grade for a short endurance task would not remove those applicability questions.

Compare this optional experiment with the time and money needed to practice ordinary fueling, pacing and equipment. If those basics remain unreliable, fixing them provides a clearer practical objective. Keep concentrated supplement use distinct from eating vegetables as part of a varied diet. A medical question about blood pressure, symptoms or medication interactions should be settled with a clinician; this page cannot clear a product for an individual.

Make the decision reviewable

Write down the reason for your decision, the uncertainty that remains and when you will revisit it. New symptoms, a different training goal or stronger relevant research can change the decision; a new advertisement alone need not.

Evidence and limits

Evidence: Limited. Mostly indirect to prolonged ultra performance. Expert agreement is not a new performance trial; long-term concentrated-use safety uncertain.
